The Sibling Support Project Advisory Committee

We are blessed to have the following friends and colleagues on our Advisory Committee. They are every bit as passionate about sibs and their issues as we are and care deeply about the Sibling Support Project’s mission.

  • Tom Fish, Ph.D.—a long-time champion of siblings’ concerns, Tom is Director of Family and Employment Services at Ohio State University’s Nisonger Center. Tom’s latest project is the very cool Next Chapter Book Club.
  • Jacque Fowler—Jacque (pronounced Jackie) is the Executive Director of The Arc of Tyler (Texas) and has extensive fundraising expertise. Jacque was responsible for bringing Sibshops to Tyler which serves young brothers and sisters throughout East Texas.
  • Jack Gorelick, Ph.D.—Jack helped start one of the nation’s first—if not the first—programs for adult sibs at AHRC in New York. He was also a pioneer of travel instruction, which teaches people with disabilities to travel independently in their communities.
  • Carolyn Graff, Ph.D., R.N.—An assistant professor of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Carolyn has researched the impact of disabilities and illnesses on brothers, sisters, and other family members. Like many of the other members of the committee, Carolyn grew up with a sibling with special needs.
  • Anne Guthrie—A sib herself, Anne has coordinated sibling events in New York, Kansas, and Washington State. Anne has a long-standing interest in adult sibling issues and currently represents the Sibling Support Project in our collaboration with University of Illinois at Chicago’s Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Aging with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
  • Nora Handler—Like Anne, Nora is a long-time SibNet member. Nora is also the sister to three brothers who have disabilities and is a veteran fundraiser. She lives in Chicago.
  • Judy Karasik—Judy, along with her brother Paul, is the author of The Ride Together, about their life with their brother David. Judy has run Sibshop workshops where young people write their own autobiographical comics. She is a writer, editor, and consultant, working primarily with non-profits.
  • Tara Kosieniak--Tara, who has a brother with developmental disabilities, has been a pioneer in providing services to brothers and sisters in the Chicago area--and elsewhere!  Tara is the Sibshop Coordinator for Community Support Service, Inc., has been involved in adult sibling efforts with John Kramer and Nora Handler, and is one of the "camp counselors" on SibKids, our listserv for young sibs.
  • John Kramer—John is working on his Ph.D. in disability and human development at the University of Illinois/Chicago. A sibling to two brothers with disabilities, John is working with Anne Guthrie on a future planning curriculum for siblings.
  • Victoria Liska--a sister of a brother who has Down syndrome, Victoria has been active in SibNet and in New York's adult sibling community for years.
  • Mary McHugh—Mary, an accomplished author, editor, and speaker, is probably best known to this community as the author of Special Siblings: Growing Up with Someone with a Disability and the New York Times Sunday Magazine article “Telling Jack.”
  • Steve Posalski—Steve is both a sib and The Sibling Support Project’s volunteer web guru. By keeping our website up to date, Steve helps families find local Sibshops and connects siblings across the globe via our listservs.
  • Tina Prochaska-Tina, the sister of brother who is deaf, has been facilitating Sibshops probably longer than anyone anywhere. Really. Besides her wonderful work with the Sibshops at the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville, Tina has pioneered Sibshops for sibs of kids who are deaf. She’s even helped establish one in Italy!
  • Harriet Redman-Harriet is both a mom and founder of the Fox Valley Sibling Support Network in Appleton, Wisconsin. The FVSSN is a long-time sponsor of Sibshops and is currently planning groups for adult brothers and sisters. Her daughter, Christiana, was one of the authors of The Sibling Slam Book.
  • Rachel Simon-Rachel, a sister, is the author of the excellent book Riding the Bus with My Sister and the favorite author of bus drivers everywhere. As many visitors to this website know, Rachel’s book was adapted into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie which aired in spring of 2005. Like Mary, Rachel discusses sibling issues and the work of the Sibling Support Project during the many speeches she gives each year.
